Linguist May not Learn Multiple Languages

Very often people pose questions to the linguists about the number of languages they have learned but feel utterly disappointed when the answer is only one or two. Reasons for their disappointment are the failure in appreciating the basic characteristics of linguist. Linguist is not a language learner or expert on multiple languages but they take up scientific study of any one or two of the four thousand plus languages currently used across the globe.

Psychology Degree Online

Linguist Job Specifications

Studying the scientific aspects of a language by observation and analysis of the speaking ways of the people using the language is the job carried out by the linguist. Ordinarily the linguist would be concerned with one of the sub disciplines in the entire linguistic genre. Specialization and training are naturally involved in the process and there are today many institutions and universities offering courses on the subject.

Important Sub Disciplines

Some of the very important sub disciplines of the linguistic studies are phonetics, phonology, and syntax. Phonetics involves the study of sounds involved in the spoken language. Distinction between the speech and sounds are the key issues involved in the study of phonetics.

Education and Training

Research in phonetics requires knowledge in human anatomy, psychology, as well as acoustics. Many times the actors learn from phoneticians the authentic pronunciation of words to give them more effects. Phonology on the other hand is the sound system inherent in the language and the rules regulating their combination and production. Distinction of sound patterns in different languages is the key study area of phonologies. Syntax on the other hand is more related with grammatical compositions of building phrases and sentences. Syntax patterns in languages and their difference from each other are the key subject matter in syntax studies.

Availability of Online Training

People who are concerned about lack of time or resources in carrying out formal school studies on linguistics may go for online training. Multiple institutes are providing online degree through distant education these days.

Other aspects like morphology and semantics are also involved in the studies of linguist. Semantics deals with meaning of words as well as sentences, whereas morphology is the breaking up of the word structure into small bits. For people interested in academic or research works the linguistics careers offers good scope of creativity and earning handsome salaries.

 Linguistics Careers

For more than five years now Michael Russell has been writing on various aspects of linguistics careers and how to go for it on this website. The site also has a huge data base of both offline and online institutions imparting training, education and awarding online degrees.

Psychopharmacology involves gaining an understanding of the different principles of the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. Understanding Psychopharmacology involves the study of:

Protein Binding

Polymorphic genes (genes that vary greatly from one person to another)

Half life (for what time will the medications stay in our body)

Drug to drug interactions (how different medications effect each other)

Psychopharmacology uses the knowledge of these different medications and their properties in order to treat the different mental disorders, neuroscience, mental disorder, clinical medicine and a differential diagnosis of the mental problems.

A Psychopharmacologist is, therefore, the person who is skilled in utilizing and building therapeutic alliance with his patient. A person who treats different people with the help of psychotropic medication is also referred to as a Psychopharmacologist.

After completing a residency training from a medical school, Physicians gain higher level of expertise and understanding in pharmacology and in Psychopharmacology. Various psychiatrists, after completing four years of their training in the advanced medical studies, attain a higher level of expertise and understanding in Psychopharmacology.

A Psychopharmacologist generally refers to a Physician who has an advanced training in Psychopharmacology. Some of the Physicians specialize in Psychopharmacology through continuing medical education, academic education or self study. There is also an examination that has to be taken after every five years.

By studying Psychopharmacology you will study a great range of subjects and medicines that have psychoactive features and properties. The commercial and professional field of Psychopharmacology and pharmacology not only focuses on recreational drugs or psychedelic drugs but most of the studies are also conducted for the study, development and the use of different drugs for alleviation of some of the symptoms and modification of behavior.

Thus a career in the field of Psychopharmacology can be quite exciting and interesting.

You’re a high school grad or a working adult and you want to continue your education. You know that there are many different types of programs that lead to a certificate or diploma, associate degree, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or doctorate. What do these terms mean? How do you choose what’s right for you? Here’s the lowdown on the different levels of study offered by career schools, colleges, and universities.

Continuing Education: These are individual courses that are typically offered to working adults. Classes are often held in the evening or on weekends to accommodate students’ busy schedules. Programs run the gamut-from cooking or painting to traditional liberal arts courses such as writing or history, and technical programs in auto repair or computers. Classes may last only one night, or continue over several weeks.

Psychology Degree Online

These classes do not lead to a degree or certificate. They are taken one at a time, for enjoyment, to acquire specific knowledge, or to help the student advance in the workplace. Sometimes, credits from continuing education courses can count towards a degree, if the institution is accredited.

Certificates and Diplomas: The terms are roughly interchangeable. Programs usually last one year, if courses are taken full-time.

For example, a typical medical assisting program will require the completion of 30 course credits. A course may count for anywhere from one to five credits, depending upon the duration and difficulty of the course. Most classroom courses count for three credits. Medical assisting programs often require the completion of four or five core subjects, such as an introduction or overview course, basic anatomy, and medical terminology. These count for twelve credits. An additional twelve credits must be earned in an area of specialty, such as administrative or clinical medical assisting. In addition, students must earn credits in a laboratory or clinical workplace environment.

Associate Degree: Taken full-time, most associate degree programs last two years.

For example, an associate of applied science in electronics and computer technology might require 71 credit hours. Courses might include communication skills (seven credits), humanities (three credits), social sciences (three credits), professional development (five credits), math and science (eight credits), electronic circuits (14 credits), digital computer systems (15 credits), electronics and controls (eight credits), and computer networks (seven credits).

Many community colleges offer two-year associate degree programs. Upon graduation, students may choose to continue their education by applying to a four-year college and earning their bachelor’s degree during the next two years.

Bachelor’s Degree: Taken full-time, most bachelor’s degree programs take four years to complete when commenced after high school graduation or earning a GED. Some programs (such as engineering) may take five years.

A typical bachelor of science in business administration degree will require a minimum of 124 credit hours. Courses might include communication skills (15 credits), humanities (nine credits), social sciences (nine credits), professional development (five credits), math and science (12 credits), business core (36 credits), and 39 credits in a concentration such as accounting or sales and marketing.

Generally, in liberal arts colleges, students are required to concentrate on a major (English, math, history, chemistry). Credits may be tallied as semester hours. For example, a program in political science may require 44 semester hours of classroom study for graduation. That’s about five and one-half hours per semester. Courses vary in how often they meet-seminars may meet only once a week, or others may meet twice a week.

Master’s Degree: The next step after a bachelor’s degree is a master’s degree in a specific academic discipline. Programs typically last eighteen months to two years, although some colleges offer combined bachelor’s-and-master’s-degree programs that you can complete in five years. Increasingly, adults are earning their master’s degrees online, particularly in business (MBA), psychology, religion, and education. Most master’s degree programs culminate with a thesis or “capstone” project.

Doctoral Degree: The top rung of the educational ladder is the Ph.D or doctorate. The time frame tends to be flexible, because most doctoral candidates are working adults. Programs generally require a major research thesis that may take several years to complete. Doctoral programs are available online.

Choosing the Program That’s Right for You

How can you decide what’s right for you? The best way is to do your research online. Log onto a reputable college directory website. Browse through the schools and programs. Check out online programs, too. See if the schools are accredited and if they offer financial aid. When you’ve narrowed down your choices to the top four or five, then request free information. Once you’ve done your research you can apply to as many schools as you want. In less time than you think you’ll be ready to enroll!

Diploma, Certificate, Associate Degree, Or Bachelor’s Degree – What’s the Difference?

Thinking about earning a degree or getting career education? To make the best decision, you need the right information. Log onto http://www.Education-For-Careers.com and compare colleges.
Psychology is a very broad subject which purely deals with human behavior, thoughts, reasoning and perceptions. It is very interesting for people who are always eager to work more for improving their existence. Besides finding a respected job, you can use psychology in several matters that constitute your everyday life, most important of which is exploring your inner-self and enhancing your interpersonal skills to deal with your life in a much better and efficient manner. It is the subject that is the most important part of our daily lives, disregarding the fact that whether we are aware of it or not.

Moreover, this branch of science has been classified into several sub-branches which make it easier for people to choose their respective category and proceed with it. If you are interested in pursuing a career in psychology, you must decide which branch of psychology would be more feasible for your intellect. Decide, choose and start moving your way in that particular direction for resulting in a very bright career.

Psychology Degree Online

The most acknowledged sub-branches of psychology include human development, health, industry, sports, media, law, humanities, social and natural sciences. All of these categories have promising careers for you if you have a thirst for knowledge and only if you want to study psychology for satisfying your passion instead of killing time or fulfilling educational formalities. The average annual income of a successful psychologist ranges from ,000 to , 00,000, which sure is not an ordinary income. But it takes a lot of time to reach that level of experience and knowledge before you start earning thousands of bucks every year. Moreover, it also requires a professional degree for legally allowing you to practice.

Among these various categories, clinical practice and counseling holds greater importance as compared to the rest. One needs to pursue a doctorate degree for starting his practice as well as for achieving his license. However, you will have to provide valid researches and thesis before you acquire your doctorate degree in psychology. Besides, you can also pursue an associate degree in psychology, which will give you the basics of this science and you will also be able to get jobs such as advertising researcher, personal analyst, manager and several others.

For achieving these degrees, there are two options: Standard/regular studies, and online education. If you have enough of free time to join a university and continue your education, it is best for you. On the other hand, if you are a working professional or too occupied managing your tough time schedule, you can apply for an online degree in psychology.
When you teach forensic psychology, the question students ask the most is how do I become a profiler? This question also appears on the frequently asked questions section of the FBI website.

Given the popularity of the CBS drama criminal minds, the how do I become a profiler question is going to be asked more than ever. The aim of this article, therefore, is to address whether becoming a criminal profiler is a realistic career aspiration.

Psychology Degree Online

Criminal Profiling in the USA

The FBI doesn’t actually have employees with the job title profiler. However, special agents at the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC) at Quantico, Virginia do construct profiles of unknown offenders as well as offering case management advice, threat assessments and interviewing strategies to law enforcement agencies both home and abroad.

You cannot simply apply to the FBI and immediately become a NCAVC agent. A basic requirement is three years service as a FBI special agent. However, such is the competition for places, successful candidates tend to have up to 10 years of service behind them along with experience investigating violent and sexual crimes and abductions.

In terms of educational requirements an advanced degree in a Behavioral or Forensic Science is often listed as preferred qualification.

It is possible to work at the NCAVC without being a special agent. these professional support positions include Intelligence Research Specialists, Violent Crime Resource Specialists, and Crime Analysts. These are essentially research positions so an in-depth knowledge of research methodology, data collection and analysis is required.

Whether you are applying to become a NCAVC agent or a research specialist you can expect to have complete a range of written and psychometric tests.

Criminal Profiling in the UK

If you think getting into profiling work in the USA seems a difficult proposition, the chances of doing it in the UK are even more remote.

In 1995 Gary Copson conducted a comprehensive survey of police use of profiling, which among other things addressed the questions, who are the profilers? What are their qualifications? What do they actually do?

Who are the profilers

The Copson study found that profilers define themselves as having relevant expertise for a particular criminal

investigation, although this expertise is not confined to one profession or academic discipline.

In total 29 profilers were identified in the course of the study, the make-up of which was as follows:

4 forensic psychiatrists

5 academic psychologists

4 clinical psychologists

6 forensic psychologists

3 therapists (unspecified)

4 British police officers

1 British police scientist

1 British police data system analyst

1 American law enforcement agency

Qualifications

Psychiatrists are qualified doctors of medicine who undertake postgraduate training in psychiatry. Psychologists have both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in their specialist area and may have secured chartered status through the governing body that oversees their professional development. Police officers who undertake profiling work have usually studied psychology as a postgraduate.

What do they do?

As with any form of profiling, the principal aim is to generate a behavioural composite of an unknown offender so that it tells you something about the personality of the individual.

In the Copson study 184 accounts of profiling are documented. In 111 of these cases the profiler put his/her advice into writing. An analysis of the content of these written reports revealed 10 main areas of advice.

Features of the offence

Character of the offence

Origins of the offender

Present circumstances of the offender

Criminality of the offender

Geography of the offender

Predicted future behaviour of the offender

Interview strategies to be adopted

Threat assessment

Specific police recommendations.

So you still want to be a criminal profiler?

Good for you, but bear in mind that very few people get to do it as a form of career.

My advice would be to concentrate on doing well within a broader field e.g. psychology, while at the same time pursuing your interest in profiling as often as you can. For instance doing a profiling related final year project or dissertation.

You can find out more about pursuing a career in profiling by visiting http://www.all-about-forensic-psychology.com/fbi-profiler.html

So You Want To Be A Criminal Profiler?

Having worked as a lecturer in psychology in the UK, I recently moved to sunny Spain with my family, where I now work as a distance learning tutor and research dissertation supervisor.

Since 2000, I’ve been involved in collaborative research with teams of forensic scientists in the UK, US and Canada.

Keep up-to-date with the world of forensic psychology by reading the forensic psychology blog. This regularly updated blog addresses the most common issues and questions raised by those thinking of or currently studying and working in the field. Among the topics covered are career and study options, forensic job opportunites, conference listings, internships, forensic research and psychological research methods.

Introduction

Its true that some people find training their first dog particularly difficult. However, it really is a little easier than you would at first think. But you have to be consistent. In this article we will focus on the basic principles that underline basic and more advanced dog training.

Psychology Degree Online

Why train your dog?

Dogs and people live in very close proximity to each other and under these conditions it is important that dogs have a degree of training. Unfortunately all to often we see the consequences of owners who have neglected to train their dog. Dog training isn’t simply for the owners benefit and that of societies as a whole but it is for the benefit of the dog.

Its in the genes – Dogs and History

A dog needs to feel it is under leadership rather than being the leader, and this goes back to a dog’s roots in history when they hunted in packs. If we were to look at a pack of wolves as an example, they are under a strict ranking system where each wolf has its place. The leader is classed as the alpha male and may be the strongest or more intelligent of the pack. For the alpha male to stay in control he may need to bare his teeth, stare, which are all rituals that take the place of an actual fight. As alpha male the leader may have certain benefits and privileges than the others ranked lower.

Today’s Dogs – You must be the alpha dog.

Dogs of today don’t live in packs but they do live with humans. This could be classed as a mixed pack and a dog needs to know it has a leader or alpha dog i.e you the owner.

Anti- Authoritarian or authoritarian approaches to Dog training?

Its in the authors opinion that strictly authoritarian dog training methods which punish a dogs unwanted behavior severely will break a dog’s will, and in the end destroy its personality. Only a disgusting human being would enjoy punishing a dog severely and watch the dog slink around in a submissive manner.

Balance and Harmony

A completely anti-authoritarian approach where the animal does as it pleases at all times will lead to an unhappy dog and an unhappy owner. A dog by its very nature needs to know what it is forbidden from doing and what it is allowed to do. By doing this the dog will feel more comfortable in its life and its surroundings. This is the balance and harmony that a dog needs, the result that the owner/trainer is after must be clear and concise for the dog to understand. Their is no strict rule to the balance between strictness and freedom as every dog is different and every situation completely unique.

Think how your dog feels

If you want to be a good and successful dog trainer it is important to try and understand how your dog feels, by understanding a little dog psychology A good trainer needs to understand not to do certain things – below is a good example.

Dog psychology

A good example of understanding your dog and a little psychology would be -

If your dog is off the lead and you are both walking down a deserted track and then a cyclist cycles past and then your dog makes chase, what should you do? Your natural instinct may be to take chase after your beloved dog, however this will make your dog feel that you are joining the game and this will not help the situation. However by calling firmly and then changing direction this is sending out a clear and concise message to your dog.

Don’t shout at your dog-it doesn’t work!

Do not subject your dog to your bad moods and anger. If you need to reprimand your dog do it quickly but always remain composed. There is no excuse for uncontrolled anger towards your dog. A dog does not try to irritate you on purpose as their desire is to always try and please the owner and dog trainer. In many cases the punished dog will not know what it has done wrong and will be unhappy that it has made you the owner or trainer unhappy.

Careers with law degree are varied and abundant. Graduating with a law degree will open doors for many possibilities and opportunities. Attending law school prepares you to think analytically, become a good problem solver and mediator as well as develops your persuasive writing techniques and teaches you to be very detail oriented. These skills are useful in any profession, and as a result, lawyers can be found in many different settings. Law students can find careers in business, real estate, publishing, the arts, education, social services and politics.

Traditional Careers with Law Degree

Psychology Degree Online

Traditional careers for lawyers include going into private practice, law firm, law department in a corporation, or government agency.

1.	Private Practice

In a private practice, you would work in a small, medium or large sized firm, made up of few attorneys to hundreds of them. Most often, small private practice firms focus on a specific type of law. Large private practice firms employ a large number of lawyers in many different areas of the law. Regardless of firm size, you would start your career as an associate, or entry level lawyer. While in this position, you would spend your time producing legal documents, writing briefs, researching topic assigned by partners. The next step in the law firm hierarchy is becoming a partner. Partners not only decide what cases are accepted by the firm but also receive more of the firm earnings.

2.	Government

In government organizations you could work at the local, state or federal level. The benefit of government law jobs is that you can practice any area of the law. Some common positions are the District Attorney and Public Defenders, Attorney General and Department of Justice Lawyers.

3.	Corporations

Corporations of all types usually have a number of lawyers working for them, otherwise known as in-house counsel. In these types of positions you would most likely have one client and deal with any legal issues that come up. Typically, corporate jobs will allow you to work less hours and have a fixed salary.

4. Academics

A relatively small amount of lawyers works in law schools. Those that do, usually serve as faculty members, specializing in one or more subjects.

Alternative Careers with Law Degree

There are many non traditional ways to use your law degree. One example are non profit organizations. Because law school develops strong persuasive writing skills, these skills can then be applied to obtaining grants and funding. These same skills are also useful in positions such as developmental officers at universities, hospitals and political campaigns. Other alternative careers that rely on problem solving and analytical skills are those of corporate executives, bankers or school administrators.

Due to the many useful skills you will learn in law school, do not worry about your career options. This degree program will prepare you to work in a number of different settings, often settings not directly tied to law. Even if you practice law for a few years and decide that a career in law is not for you – many alternative career options are at your disposal. Keep your eyes open and be proactive.

Outreach organizations have a goal of helping individuals whether through hard times or bad situations. Human services professionals are trained to help people by assisting them with their personal situations. Online study in human services provides degree opportunities that enable students to enter the workforce quickly.

The broad overview of the career shows professionals working with individuals and families to help them handle and change their current predicament. Degree programs study how to provide services to those in need in areas such as social, health, and welfare. In many professional settings industry workers work in conjunction with social services, corrections, health care providers, and more. Some career responsibilities can include working with convicted criminals, providing support to unemployed parents, and counseling individuals who have a substance abuse problem. Students can enter careers where they work as administrators for organizations that provide these services to needy individuals. Online opportunities teach students how to carry out all these work related activities. Students need to research programs that fit their chosen career path. Doing this ensures a better education and allows students to directly step into a career related to their degree.

Psychology Degree Online

Online study in human services offer students the ability to earn certificates. Certificates can be earned in early childhood education, child development associate, and substance abuse worker. These programs are a great prerequisite for students who are not sure what area they want to work in or can’t commit to a full program. All certificates can be applied to further study when a student is capable of enrolling in a degree program.

Degrees can be earned from an associate’s to a PhD. Associate’s degrees allow individuals to gain entry-level positions through preparation courses. In a two-year associate’s degree program students are taught how to evaluate the needs of individuals to provide appropriate care. Coursework in case management, basic psychology, and basic counseling allow students to give service in rehabilitation and substance abuse treatment. Further education is beneficial to gain a career that is more specific.

A bachelor’s degree program provides a combined schooling approach of career specific courses and general education courses to give students an in depth study that is transferable into the work force. With a four-year bachelor’s degree students can work with government agencies, health care clinics, and food banks. Schooling equips students with the knowledge to concentrate on psychological development, child development, and evaluation. Courses that allow students to step into entry-level managerial positions include conflict management, crisis intervention, pharmacology, and gerontology. Students interested in furthering their understanding can enter a master’s degree or a PhD program. These degree programs offer courses designed to assist students to become directors and researchers in the field.

Students should strongly consider online study in human services if they want to help people better their situation. The people that make up this professional industry are remembered by clients and are able to see the results of their work daily. The result of working through an accredited degree program gives students the opportunity to make a difference and enter a career where they can put their interpersonal skills to use.
